Creating a memorable unboxing experience for your brand

It sounds strange, but did you know there are people on YouTube who make masses of money from creating ‘unboxing videos’. It’s a trend which has caught on in recent years. People who have a vested interest in keeping up to date with the hottest new brands on the market spend their time watching these videos, allowing them to influence their purchasing decision.

A huge part of unboxing videos is discussing the product packaging in immense detail – the way it feels, the way it looks, the way it makes the consumer feel, first impressions, last impressions, quality reviews, and so on. These videos get people excited for brands and their new products. Therefore, creating an excellent unboxing experience is becoming more and more of a priority for those who want to keep the internet, and consumers, on their side.

So, how can you make sure your unboxing experience is worth five stars?

Your target audience

Think about who you’re targeting and tailor your packaging towards them. This doesn’t just mean designing a fantastic logo to catch their attention. It also means thinking about the materials you use. Younger generations are more environmentally conscious than their predecessors because of their upbringing during a climate crisis.

The percentage of Generation Y who report that they “buy as many green/eco-friendly products as they can” is up to 36% in 2012 from 31% in 2009. For them, heaps of plastic won’t go down well in the reviews as you’ll be seen as a harmful business. But plastic has its uses also, so use it intelligently at your discretion.

Aesthetics

We’re all human, which means, unfortunately, our first impressions are often influenced by how things look as much as we don’t like to believe it. Your packaging needs to say what you need it to say in the glimpse of an eye, which means you probably need a professional design company on your side if you want to pack a punch with your packaging.

Think about what you want your branding to say and who you want it to speak to. Then, translate this into a timeless design.

Touch

Your packaging needs to feel good – no paper cuts and certainly no scissor-resistant plastic. People should be able to feel its luxuriousness, even if it’s just imagined. For example, have you ever picked up a product and knew it was cheap just by how it felt?

People do this while shopping every day and you don’t want to be a part of that. Use high-quality materials, and experiment with new ones, so your products scream luxury without you having to say anything.

So whether you’re aiming for the unboxing YouTube crowd or not, now you know that packaging is about more than how it looks. Why not be a trendsetter and make the next packaging sensation?
